Farm Open Day – The Herrick Family AKA Youtuber ‘Baldys Farm’

THIS EVENT HAS NOW HAPPENED.
The Herrick family—James, Eddie, and Joanne—welcome you to Folly Farm to see their growing and innovative beef enterprise. With 130 cows, including 70 Stabilisers, they are working towards expanding their herd to 250–300 while maintaining a focus on sustainable farming.
ABOUT YOUR HOSTS
Folly Farm has been a cornerstone of the Herrick family’s farming legacy since 1961, building on generations of agricultural experience. In recent years, the family has transitioned from arable farming to focus entirely on beef production, steadily expanding their enterprise. The farm now features extensive herbal leys, used for grazing and silage, and employs rotational grazing with daily cattle moves to maximise pasture efficiency. Stabiliser bull calves are reared entire, while Charolais-sired progeny are finished as steers. All livestock are finished on the farm and sold to Kepak in St. Mirren.
This success is built on a commitment to effective practices:
- Herd Development: Starting in 2019 with the purchase of in-calf Stabiliser heifers, the family has steadily grown their Stabiliser herd by adding bulls, cows, and further heifers. Their existing Aberdeen Angus, Limousin, and British Blue cows are being graded up with Stabiliser genetics.
- Management: Rotational grazing and the integration of herbal leys enhance soil health and sustain consistent herd performance.
- Production: Bulls are finished at 14–16 months, heifers and steers 17–20 months, ensuring efficient and sustainable production cycles.
- Results: The farm boasts a 96% calving rate within nine weeks and achieves average weaning weights of 280kg at seven months without creep feeding.
