Derryman Open day

THIS EVEN HAS NOW HAPPENED -You are invited to Home Farm, Sidbury Sidmouth Devon on Tuesday 12th May, to see the Evergreen Stabiliser Herd.
Alan and Gwenan Derryman run a progressive organic livestock enterprise at Home Farm, Honiton, Devon managing 75 Stabiliser suckler cows alongside 800 Romney ewes across 700 acres. The farm operates under a Higher-Level Stewardship scheme, with grazing land typical of average to lower quality.
Having previously run a mixed-breed herd, Alan and Gwenan made the strategic decision to transition to Stabiliser genetics, selecting a breed capable of delivering efficient performance with minimal intervention. A key driver was the need for homebred replacements with resilience to tick-borne disease, particularly important on what is recognised as a red water-prone farm.
Operating a closed herd policy has delivered significant health and performance benefits. This approach has enabled the Derrymans to successfully control and manage diseases such as BVD and IBR, while maintaining a robust, fertile and efficient cow herd.
Home Farm is also a committed member of the Stabiliser Multiplier system, breeding high-quality cattle for sale to commercial producers. Heifers calve at 24 months, with the best retained as replacements and others marketed as breeding females. Bulls are both DNA and genomically tested, with top-performing animals sold as breeding bulls, while those not meeting breeding criteria are finished for beef.
Finishing performance is a key strength of the breed and Alans’ system. Steers are finished by 22 months, consistently achieving R grades and are sold to ABP.
“The Stabilisers do exactly what we need them to – easy calving, highly fertile and great temperament. For us, they are the ultimate suckler cow” Alan adds.
